WHO IS THAT PERSON SITTING NEXT TO THE MAGISTRATE, ACTING SERIOUS AND TALKING ALL THE TIME?
Jessie, a Law university internship student, accompanied a partner at a law firm he works with to the magistrate's court in Nakawa for a case as part of his clerkship learning journey to learn how the court system works. He was supposed to narrate his learning experience and ask where needed. The thing that caught his attention while in a court session was the person who sat next to the magistrate as they presided over the cases.
WHO IS THIS PERSON?
This person is known as a magistrate court clerk or court clerk. He or she has a variety of roles they play in court, for example, calling the cases and announcing the parties, recording proceedings, managing court files, administering the oath of witnesses, keeping order on how cases are called and scheduled. They often appear very serious because they are handling official records and ensuring everything runs properly, and they talk frequently because they interact with both the magistrate and the other parties involved in court proceedings.
Court clerks are vital in how court proceedings are run; therefore, their role cannot be underestimated.
