Kamuli Chief Magistrate’s court has sentenced a 35-year-old woman to 20 years in prison for attempted murder after she was convicted of cutting off her husband’s genitals.

Court heard that Kevina Nabirye, a mother of four cut off the genitals of Mathias Bwamiki, to whom she has been married for the last 10 years after accusing him of poor performance in bed and infidelity.
The February 18, 2025 incident is said to have happened at around 11pm in their marital home in Buguwa village in Kamuli District.

Delivering his judgment to a fully-packed court on Wednesday, February 26 after visiting ailing Bwamiki in Kamuli General Hospital, the chief magistrate, Paul Owino said Nabirye pleaded guilty to the charges of attempted murder before she was convicted.

Kevina Nabirye (L) talks to the State attorney to make her plea before being sentenced to 20 years in prison.

“After visiting the victim on his hospital bed and on your own plea of guilt and as deterrent measure, this court sentences you to 20 years imprisonment to reform her character, become law-abiding, respect the sanctity of life and to sound a warning to other would-be offenders but if you feel the sentence is harsh, you can appeal within 14 days,” the magistrate said.

Mr Owino said that Bwamiki whom he found in hospital writhing in pain denied claims that he had forgiven his wife and instead asked the magistrate to give her a deterrent sentence.

“Our children are already haunted by the mother’s act and too scared to stay with her or her relatives but we shall take care, counsel, comfort and provide for them. However, I pray that you give her a deterrent punishment maybe even keep her away in prison till she is too old,” Bwamiki is quoted as saying.
