At the opening of 15th session of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) Assembly, held in Abu Dhabi UAE which brought together global leaders, policymakers, and young innovators to discuss the urgent need for energy transition, Maracha County who was one of the Panelists retarieted the need for a just transition. This year’s meeting themed, “Accelerating the Renewable Energy Transition – The Way Forward,” underscored the critical importance of energy security, socio-economic development, and innovative financing options.
One of the key highlights of the meeting was the Legislators' Forum where Maracha County MP Hon. Oguzu Lee passionately called for a fair energy transition. He emphasized the need for initiatives that alleviate the burden on the poor in developing countries, who are disproportionately affected by emissions from the developed world.
Hon. Oguzu highlighted the importance of supporting and partnering with countries like the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Uganda, which have significant potential for renewable energy. These partnerships are essential for meeting their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) targets and ensuring energy security and universal access to affordable energy by 2030.
Running concurrently with the Legislators Forum, the IRENA Youth Forum, titled “The New Generation of Decision Makers,” provided a platform for young leaders to engage with global thought leaders, government representatives, and IRENA experts. The Youth Forum aimed to strengthen youth networks and empower young people to contribute to the global energy discourse. Through interactive sessions, debates, and workshops, participants added a youth perspective to the discussions on accelerating renewable energy deployment and achieving climate objectives.
The forums addressed several pressing issues, including the need to combat illicit financial flows, which significantly contribute to fiscal deficits in Africa, amounting to up to $80 billion annually. Hon. Oguzu urged the global community to assist Africa in tackling this challenge to ensure a sustainable and inclusive energy transition in light of fiscal deficits in Africa.
The meeting also showcased success stories like Uruguay’s achievement in mobilizing $6 billion in energy investments, achieving energy independence with 99.9% coverage, and reducing tariffs through investments in renewable energy. These examples serve as models for other countries to follow, demonstrating the potential of renewable energy to drive economic growth and sustainability.
The 15th IRENA Assembly highlighted the urgent need for a just energy transition that prioritizes the needs of the poor and vulnerable in developing countries. By addressing energy security, combating illicit financial flows, and empowering the youth, the global community can support a sustainable and equitable energy future for all. The active participation of legislators and youth at the meeting underscored the importance of inclusive dialogue and collaboration in achieving these goals. The meeting will conclude on 13th with General Assembly of members.
