Police in Kamuli have arrested a 28-year-old suspected drug addict over allegedly raping a 90-year-old woman.
Police disclosed that the suspect allegedly broke into the woman’s house before allegedly forcing her into sex.
The suspect has been identified as a resident of Nankulyaku, Nankulyaku Ward, Northern Division in Kamuli Municipality.
The victim whose particulars have been withheld, is a resident of Kulingo zone in the same division.
Busoga North Regional Police spokesperson Michael Kasadha confirmed that the suspect was arrested in Kamuli industrial area where he was hiding.
Kasadha attributed the incident to the woman’s lonely life since she had been staying alone in the house where the suspect took advantage of a dilapidated door to break in.
"We implore members of the public to always have good neighborhood watch to the elderly people and at the same time relatives taking full responsibility of caring for those in advanced age,’’ Kasadha advised.
The suspect is currently detained at Kamuli Police Station likely to face charges related to aggravated breaking and entering, inflicting actual bodily harm with the intent to have sexual intercourse and aggravated sexual assault.
“Once investigations are complete, he will be arraigned in courts to answer different charges,’’ Kasadha told journalists on Monday.
Speaking to Monitor on her hospital bed, the victim narrated her ordeal saying neighbors who had gone to check on her informed her relatives about the incident before she was taken to Kamuli General Hospital for medical attention.
“I was flogged from my house and forced into sex three times and ordered to keep quiet lest I get a second dose,’’ she said.
Betty Nabirye, one of the granddaughters taking care of her at Kamuli General Hospital said “the old woman's private parts were severely damaged with blood oozing.”
Earlier, the suspect denied the accusations saying he didn't have intentions of sexually assaulting the woman.
“I had gone to eat groundnuts, but I was mistaken to have gone there for rape,” he claimed.
If convicted, the suspect could get tough punishments that include a long jail term, per the Ugandan law.
