Human Rights Report for 2023: Cattle Rustling and Prolonged Drought Led to Death of Over 2000 People in Karamoja.
With hardly an hour left before the Uganda Human Rights Commission unveils it's 26th Annual Report on the state of human rights & freedoms in Uganda for 2023, let us dive into the 2022 report findings.
In the 2022 annual report, the Commission revealed that the prolonged dry spell that ravaged Karamoja sub-region killed over 2200 people in the districts of; Kotido, Moroto, Kaabong and Napak.
“Insecurity and intensified livestock raids and theft intensified in April 2022, leading to loss of lives and isolated incidents of death among the population. The fragility of the situation not only limited households from accessing their farms for fear of being killed but also continued to deny them to access income for food purchase and safe grazing area for their herds,” read in part the 2022 human rights report.
