James has been on Esther’s case begging for love for a year now. Esther has always played it cool and ignored him. But she came home to find a crowd and James was right in the middle threatening to go on a hunger strike if Esther does not see him on Valentine’s Day and ‘accept his love’. He even sent her a video of himself throwing away all the food in the house to prove he was starting to starve himself. Esther is worried that she might be arrested if something should happen to James because she has rejected him.
WHAT DOES THE LAW SAY?.
By law, no one can be legally held for what happens to you unless they have some legal duty to look out for your wellbeing. In law this is called a duty of care.
For example, if your child starves because you did not want to force them to eat, then you as a parent will be held responsible because a parent has a duty to protect a child (even from themselves) and make sure that child is well fed. This duty applies to doctors and their patients or to those in charge of looking after the elderly or those who cannot look after themselves.
However, part of being an adult, is that you are PERSONALLY responsible for all your actions and reactions. If you choose to starve, it is up to, and it is no one’s fault unless they deny you food when they were supposed to give it to you.
So, if James chooses to go on his hunger strike, Esther will not be responsible, and the law cannot force Esther into a relationship. All Esther can do is inform the police about what James is doing.
This is because every citizen does not only belong to themselves but to their country and if you try and harm yourself, the government will see that you are punished for attempting to harm a citizen of the country.
