Norman Ijuka, Arua district water engineer, was apprehended by the Inspectorate of Government (IG) for the alleged misappropriation of government assets valued at 130 million shillings.
His arrest, which occurred on January 3, 2024, in Arua district, precedes his scheduled appearance before the Anti-Corruption Court on January 5, 2024, where he will face charges related to the abuse and theft of public property.
Deputy Inspector General of Government, Dr. Patricia Achan Okiria, revealed that Ijuka is accused of pilfering 847 water pipes intended for the Odupi water project in Omugo sub-county, Terego district.
Additionally, he stands accused of embezzling materials, including iron bars, concrete blocks, and assorted paints valued at 30 million shillings, from the construction site of the Arua National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) office.
The IG’s decision to apprehend Ijuka was spurred by allegations that he falsely claimed completion of certain projects, leading to investigations and subsequent charges. Despite being on the run since committing these offenses, Ijuka was apprehended on Wednesday.
Dr. Okiria emphasized the gravity of corruption-related offenses, stressing their adverse impact on society. Corruption erodes public trust, hinders public services, and squanders taxpayer money. Addressing and combatting abuse and theft of public property is deemed crucial for the effective functioning of public institutions and the well-being of communities.
To tackle this menace, the IG is implementing comprehensive measures, including bolstering governance, enforcing robust legal frameworks, promoting transparency, and involving citizens in the fight against corruption.
Dr. Okiria highlighted the importance of safeguarding public resources to foster the common good and ensure a more accountable and prosperous society.
