What is a VPN server, exactly?.

A VPN server is a server belonging to a virtual private network. In short, it’s remote physical hardware used to route your connection when you use VPN software. When your VPN is active, your personal web traffic travels via an encrypted tunnel through a server before it is sent to its destination. This process takes place in secure tunnels. But increased security isn’t the only benefit.

When you use a VPN, the server you connect to masks your true IP address. with its own IP address. As a result, you’ll appear as if you’re actually connecting from your server’s location rather than your true physical location.

Why should I use a VPN server to change my IP address?

You may not realize it, but your IP address has significant ramifications over your online privacy and freedom. Without VPN protection, your real IP address is vulnerable to the prying eyes of third parties and snoopers. And with your IP address, they can target you with area-specific ads, monitor your personal internet activity, and even approximate your true physical location.

Additionally, due to overly-aggressive filters, some of the websites you visit may even wrongfully deny you access to certain pages, services, and media because of your IP address. Fortunately, however, you can change your IP address with IPVanish and eliminate these issues.

When you use a VPN server to change your IP address, your new IP address will match the server’s IP. This increases your online privacy, because it prevents snoopers from determining your true physical location. It also allows you to evade unjustified restrictions placed on your true IP address.

Will a VPN server improve my internet speed?

In most cases, a VPN server will not improve your internet speed. This is because when you use a VPN, your internet traffic is first rerouted before it reaches its final destination. Additionally, VPN use adds a layer of security to your connection process.

As a result, many VPNs will slow down your internet speed. Fortunately, with IPVanish, this speed difference is often undetectable. In fact, while you shouldn’t bank on a VPN improving your internet speed, there are some instances where it can. Most of these instances are related to bandwidth throttling, which occurs due to ISP tracking. When your internet service provider monitors your traffic and determines you’re using a lot of bandwidth, they can intentionally slow down, or throttle, your speed.

Think of bandwidth throttling like a traffic jam. While under normal conditions one route may be the fastest, a traffic jam changes that. In those cases, another route could be faster, even if it’s technically a greater distance. For bandwidth throttling, a VPN works in a similar manner. A VPN server is more than likely a greater distance away than the servers your ISP uses to deliver your internet connection. But when they throttle that connection, rerouting your internet traffic may deliver a faster experience, regardless of the increased distance.

Even when bandwidth throttling is not a major issue, however, IPVanish still provides the fastest VPN experience possible. Our server network has been engineered for speed, with the most efficient hardware and software possible. Additionally, our VPN features have been specifically developed to ensure high-speed connections are always possible with IPVanish.
