Frequent Road Accidents: People in Maracha District Decry Absence of Humps, Plan to Petition UNRA, Ministry of Works and Transport.

The residents and political leaders in Maracha District have decried the absense of humps on sharply curved spots particularly along the highway Arua - Maracha  - Koboko road that has persistently contributed to fatal accidents.

Their cry follows another mysterious accident on a sharply curved road spot at Nyoro which happened on Friday 8pm 7-April-2023 claiming the life of one of their Councillors, Hon Droma Morish representing the people of Yivu Sub-county to the District.

This comes the second noticeable accident in spate of one month after another youngman alias Agawu Zarome was ran over by a speeding car at Okokoro trading center last month March 2023 but he survived, leaving him with fractured arm and other body injuries.

The concerned stakeholders who were expressing their grievances through a WhatsApp group named "MARACHA PARLIAMENT FOR DEVELOPMENT" said, it is high time they petition Uganda National Roads Authority  (UNRA) and Ministry of Works & Transport over these frequenting fatal accidents as a result of some reckless drivers, which the stakeholders believe, by mounding humps on those dangerous road spots, it would minimize the accidents.

Mr Adriko Jimmy, a retired veteran journalist and businessman who was the first person to chip in the idea, said, Maracha district officials should order UNRA to mound humps in Okokoro, Koyi, Ovujo, Nyoro, Nyadri and Oleba as the dangerous road spots.

Another concerned citizen +256782***160 with alias name JB Mpiana blamed the frequent accidents on lack of good will and corruption in Maracha District.
He said, we needed humps to reduce the speed of reckless drivers on the road and how did Nyangilia, ombaci area in Koboko district get their humps ?.

Mr Lobe Paul, one of the aggrieved persons urged leaders in Maracha District to wake up and prioritize humps in order to save lives.

Mr Patrick Pario a member of that WhatsApp group who is also amongst the people complaining over the accidents, asked which particular office is responsible to write letter to the Ministry so that the challenge can be addressed.

[April/7, 10:30 PM] Jimmy Adriko: District authorities please ORDER UNRA to put road numbs in Okokoro, Koyi, Ovujo, Nyoro, Nyadri and Oleba. Nabusayi districts have fine that.

[4/7, 10:35 PM] Adrabo Tom: I agree 💯.

[April/7, 10:36 PM] +256 782***160: Sad. Sorry to say it, but the corruption or lack of good will in Maracha manifesting in these accidents.
Drivers fly at speed they want. We needed humps to reduce their speed. How did nyangilia area get? And the road going to ombaci in koboko?
Am always worried of the schools near the road. Something must be done.

[April/7, 10:39 PM] Jimmy Adriko: I am not sure of the cause but Nyoro had always been a black spot. The highway in entire Maracha has no speed humps when Koboko has some from Nyangilia on the sane highway. District Engineer do your job,

[April/7, 10:40 PM] +256 772***670: Surely  Jimmy. Our leaders should wake up and prioritize  humps around nyoro corner.

[April/7, 10:46 PM] +256 782***160: Not only Nyoro. From oleba, nyadri market day people struggle to cross  near CPS. NYORO, Maracha mission, hospital, ovujo health center corner, ombere tc, Koyi, okokoro, Robu primary. The design doesn't care about pedestrian lives.

[April/7, 10:57 PM] +256 777***799: That area deserves humps.

[April/7, 11:11 PM] +256 773***467: We have lost many of our people on that road. I understand that the number is getting thick year in year out despite public outcry over humps at key points along the Vurra-Arua-Oraba road. Btw which office is responsible to write to the ministry over this? 😱.

[April/7, 11:11 PM] Rt Hon Wanni Emmanuel Speaker Maracha: Members in this difficult situation where our hearts are very heavy I request you out of respect to  hon Morris and the bereaved family let us act with sensitivity.

Since first council when hon Adripiyo Emmanuel, hon Adiga Lawrence in his term and now hon Obitre Stephen series of notification on the  fatal accidents which claimed good number of our brothers and sisters were submitted to UNRA but they paid death todate I have copies of all these transactions as evidence hon Anite used her position to direct unra put humble in koboko.

It's therefore unfair and not enough to attribute these accidents to your leaders for failing to make follow up and engaging the ministry.

Kindly, friends 👆at moment please save us in this trying moment with some of your submissions for now.

May heavens open for you my brother Thomson and the angels of the Lord  receive you in joy till we meet again.

[April/7, 11:18 PM] Adrabo Tom: Good! But you need to press harder than before.....now that minister for transport is coming to west Nile can the leaders present such live examples to them......someone can tweet him directly and get reply.

[April/8, 5:23 AM] +256 776***922: Droma's passing on is so sad. Such a young industrious, social and focused gentleman, supportive to the district socio-economic growth, A close brother, Strong NRM Cadre, and DLC Counsellor for Yivu subcounty to the district is real uncalled for at this moment.

I recently lost my brother and many other friends on this very road. We need to urgently look at the design of this road and get all the dark spots installed  with warning & speed limit  signs as well construction of hamps

I condole with the family of late Droma Morris, the entire community of Maracha District and the Country at large for the unexpected loss of our brother.

May the  Angels of our Good Lord keep soul of late Droma Morris and May his soul rest in peace 🙏.

[April/8, 9:04 AM] Kawawa Michael: Some times back ,hon Bako Judith raised this issue somewhere and I think she was not supported to push for the issue of the humps ,this arua Oraba highway has only humps at towards Koboko at nyangilia , imagine from Arua city ,so Mr Jimmy this is a good idea I support it and will start the noise immediately,we shall not allow the responsible pipo to sleep ,
Let the soul of the late Hon rest in Total peace.

[April/8, 9:12 AM] Yiacia Stanley: Let road users not only have road discipline at hump spots but rather everywhere on the roads. This automatically will even eliminate humps and ensue the best observance of road signs.

[April/8, 9:29 AM] Yiacia Stanley: When some of you pin NRM, you pin yourselves ignorantly. Quite NRM when you want to pin it meaningfully. Just for loughs.

[4/8, 3:33 PM] +256 774***407: The reason why government decided against putting these humps and other physical traffic regulars is because some stubborn scrap metal dealers vandalized some of the road signs (furniture) on these roads which equally made it difficult for drivers who are new on some of these roads to drive safely. One general lost his life due to road accident caused by the humps due to the absence of the these road furniture.

[4/8, 10:38 PM] +256 784***118: Petitions produce faster results in this regime.

The councillors in the district should put up a petition through the LCV & the RDC to the Speaker of Parliament with detailed history of the accidents and the fatalities involved.

Am sure it takes less than a week for the Speaker to summon the Minister of works and transport where UNRA falls.
When we talk without actions nothing happens.
My take.
Happy Easter.

[April/8, 10:56 PM] Adrabo Tom: Actually the council should prepare the petition and hand it over to the concerned line minister who is expected in arua next week if possible.

[April/8, 11:14 PM] +256 784***118: What  most people can talk and say  is to preach about NRM and the yellow colour.

If our people were to present this issue the way they love and adore NRM accidents would be minimal.

I would IMPLORE the LCV takes this opportunity to raise an EXTRA Ordinary sitting of the Council during the send off to raise the matter.

Here we're not using the loss of our Dear Hon Council member's death but   show the magnitude of the problem in the entire Maracha district stretching from Lokirago'do,  Robu primary area, Okokoro Town Council,Koyi, Ovujo town Council, Nyoro, Nyadri and Oleba trading centre.
My take.

[April/8/2023, 10:11 PM] +971 55 3***698: Good evening, my people. concerning the issue of Putting HUMPS ON the road, it's a serious issue that needs to be addressed immediately because most accidents are due to over speeding since there are no humps to reduce speed. My humble appeal to our leaders in the parliament should take note of this, and they should raise this issue in their next sitting.

[April/9/2023, 7:32 AM] Andega Patrick: True but then the behavior of vandalism of road signs by our people should equally be checked.

We should also support UNRA in enforcing and implementing the policy of no destruction of road signs for scraps and any scrap dealers got should face it severely.

There are several factors considered before raising humps everywhere as we suggest.

Even road indiscipline is also another cause of accidents on the road and no one can completely control it but can partially avoid it.

May the lord receive our brothers soul to eternity.
