CCTV footage is not entirely private. This is because it takes video footage from outside the house of a person for security purposes. So if you opt to rent in a place that has CCTV cameras, it means that you consent to having footage of yourself recorded when you are either in the compound or on the premises.


However, this does not take away a person’s right to privacy and their private information. The law (the Data Protection and Privacy Act) says that each of us is entitled to keep our personal information private unless we allow someone else to use it for a particular purpose. CCTV footage is personal data and should be treated as such. The owner of the CCTV system (the landlady) has a legal obligation to ensure that the footage is collected and processed for only the security purpose she put it up for, not to catch ‘cheaters’.


Georgina could sue the landlady for giving Geoffrey access to the footage without her consent or for failing to protect her privacy rights. Additionally, Geoffrey has no right to the footage since it belongs to Georgina and Georgina can sue him for accessing her personal information without (the footage) without her consent.

Lab Student Drowned, Body Missing in Rokoze Lake in Nyadri Sub-county, Maracha District.
