Kim Kandazi and Kanyesigye Wesiteri got married at St. Francis Chapel in 2010. The following day, Kim’s twitter, Instagram names were changed, and she informed all her friends that from then on, she was going to be referred to as Kim Kandanzi Wesiteri. However, the HR has since refused to refer to Kim by ‘her’ new names in any communication written or verbal ‘mbu’ they are not legal, but Kim feels like they are undermining her. Is the HR right?
WAS KIM’S HR, RIGHT?
Yes. Getting married does not automatically mean there is a new name next to your others. demand that everyone refer to you as such. This is because Marriage makes you someone’s spouse.
It is legal for Kim to be called Mrs. Kanyesigye because she is Kanyesigye’s wife. This is called a change in her marital status. It is also ok for friends or family members or yourself to informally call you Kim Kandazi Westeri to tell friends informally that you got married to him, but this has no legal significance. However, this must not be used on any official documents or communication because that person and Kim Kandazi are two different people before the law.
By law, if you want to change your name, there is a legal process that must be followed so that everyone and the law can recognise you as the same person with a different name now.
