Mbabazi and Okello want to get married however since they are from different tribes, they are not sure which marriage to enter so that they can save money. So, they would like to know when they can consider themselves married.
WHAT DOES THE LAW SAY?
In Uganda, there are different forms of marriage and each of them dictates when the marriage is formalised.
Under the traditional marriage, for instance, one may consider themselves married once the traditional rites and rituals accepted by the bride’s tribe to constitute the formal conclusion of a marriage have been performed. In some cultures, this could be once the bride wealth has been received, in others, it is when the father of the bride formally hands over or drops off the bride to the groom and his family. For example, if Mbabazi takes Okello for “Kuhingira” then once the ceremony is done, they are formally married.
On the other hand, for religious and civil marriages, there are formalities such as wedding vows, exchanging of rings, and signing of marriage certificates. All these necessary stages must be conducted, but it is at the signing of the Marriage Certificate that you can consider yourself married.
These two forms of marriage must be registered as a requirement.
