Minister of State for Privatization and Investment, Evelyn Anite has denied responsibility of the procession in her constituency in Koboko district which has sparked widespread criticism that she undermined the guidelines against Covid.

A video of a procession of hundreds of people, mostly women dressed in NRM t-shirts, went viral on social media on Saturday prompting outrage from Ugandans. The people in the procession carried posters of Evelyn Anite who is contesting to retain her Parliamentary seat as the Woman MP for Koboko.

Many criticized her for disregarding guidelines on social distancing which could quickly spread Covid infections.

The video also attracted condemnation towards government for selectively implementing the guidelines by blocking Opposition political activities while letting activities of the ruling party go on uninterrupted.

In recent weeks, NRM politicians including Ministers have blatantly ignored Covid preventive guidelines and gathered crowds of people to hold campaigns.

On Sunday, Minister Anite came out to deny the claims that she was responsible for the procession in Koboko.

“The procession that has been widely viewed on social media was not a campaign rally. I did not organize it & neither did my team,” Anite wrote on Twitter.

“I was not even there!” she added.

She says “the spontaneous procession formed on the occasion of the delivery of the ambulances for Koboko Municipality”.

The Minister went on to justify her donation of the ambulances which she says the community is in great need of since the nearest referral hospital is in Arua.

“We promised to deliver the ambulances before COVID-19, but the pandemic has made them even more urgent to respond to emergencies during this period,” Anite said.

However, many people have poked holes in her excuse, saying there were several other ways through which she could have delivered the said ambulances without endangering the lives of her constituents.

Others questioned her claim that neither her not her team mobilized the masses, wondering how the people in the procession managed to get branded t-shirts and posters or who arranged the public address system that was playing music.

The Minister said: “As leaders in Koboko, we continue to raise awareness 4 our people to social distance, wear masks, wash hands & follow guidelines provided by Ministry of Health. Health of our people is my number one priority and I’ll do more to sensitize them & warn them against such dangerous practices”.
