Musa and meat can’t be separated. Growing up, there was at least some beef or goat, chicken or even duck soup as part of his meals. Recently after chasing after some ‘deal’ the whole day, he was told to come to Meat King barbeque to finalize the deal. After signing and receiving the money, he was invited to eat with the clients. Musa did not hesitate. Immediately he dived in and on his 6th stick, people at the next table said “mbizi ewoomye”. (The pork is delicious). When Musa realized that he what he had eaten was haram(forbidden), he started screaming. Karim (who knows Musa) had just parked near the tables overhead it and wanted Musa arrested for his ‘sin’. Was it a crime for Musa to accidentally eat the pork?
WHAT DOES THE LAW SAY?
In Uganda, the law (the constitution) says we all have freedom of worship. This means that every person is free to enjoy and practice their religious beliefs. However, the law does not punish sins. It only deals with criminal offences that affect someone’s right to religion such as making fun of or abusing one’s religion.
When a Muslim mistakenly eats pork, this is not a criminal offence as per laws of Uganda instead it is a matter of religion. This means that it is something that Islamic practice, will handle.
