41-Years-Old Man Digs His Own Grave in Maracha District.

The residents of Ebapi village, Baria Parish in Nyadri Sub-county, Maracha east constituency, Maracha District are in shock after a 41 year old man started digging his own grave.


The man, identified as Mr Opiga Michael, who seems to be frustrated over some challenges in life, started digging his own grave on Tuesday 10-September-2024 until he was stopped by the elders in Nyaria clan.

While speaking to our reporter on Wednesday evening 11-September-2024, Mr Opiga Michael, said, his main plan  was to commit suicide after finishing digging the grave for burying himself, explained that, he feels frustrated, abandoned and hated by his own clan people, whom he accused of piling lies against him and some even attempted for three times to kill him with Panga and also six attempts through some Gangsters to shoot him dead with a Gun.

He further added that, all his efforts to better his life through selling tobacco and acres of sweet potatoes in his own land have been frustrated by some clan members who advise buyers not to buy products from his land.

The mother of the victim, Biata Driwaru who expressed fear that, his Son Opiga Michael now days sleeps on bed with Panga, vowed to inform her kinsmen over the incident and declare that, if her son eventually dies, people should come for the burial without eating anything and everyone should also return back to their homes and villages without eating any food at the funeral of her son.

A village health team (VHT)  and also a member of the same family, Mr Fudribo Emmanuel stressed that, Mr Opiga Michael attempted to commit suicide around May-2024 but he was saved by the people.

Mr Aliji Ponzio, a 77-year-old elder upon counseling and stopping Opiga Michael from continuing with digging of his own grave explained that, culturally, what Mr Opiga has done is a misfortune and the already dug grave can only be filled back if a cultural prayer is organized with some animals slaughtered and a seedling of a traditional tree in Lugbara language called, EDOLO should be buried in the dug grave.

The LC1 Chairman for Ebapi Village,  Mr Atema Vicky, while narrating a similar incident which occurred recently in this same Baria Parish, where a Youth committed suicide and it caused a lot problems and fights, wondered why and how someone would prepare for his own death like the way Mr Opiga Michael is doing, something the LC1 said he has seen it for the first time in his entire life.
