Yesterday Sunday 30-7-2023 was the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons.
Trafficking in persons is a serious crime which violates the human rights of every person. Every year, thousands of men, women and children fall into the hands of traffickers in their own countries and abroad.
Human trafficking is a crime where people are tricked or forced into doing things, they don't want to do such as working without pay, being forced into prostitution, slavery, working against your will (involuntary servitude), etc. This is done when someone is forced or tricked into being moved from one place to another or held against their will using threats, lies, or taking advantage of their helplessness.
For example if a Kafumisi a boda man meets a Makku who is just has just come off a bus in Kampala from her village for the first time and instead of giving her directions ‘tricks’ her into going to his house or a lodge for the night to have sex with her to pay for the room, then we can say that kafumisi has taken advantage of Nakku’s helplessness (having nowhere to go) to sleep with her, therefore Kafumisi is a human trafficker.
If you know someone who has suffered this, or is going through it report to the police on their emergency helpline number: 999 or 112 for assistance.
