Did You Know, You Can Be Arrested for Throwing Rubbish on the Road ?.

CAN I BE ARRESTED FOR THROWING RUBBISH ON THE ROAD ?.

Nakatenda was shocked when Afande Tom stopped her because she was seen throwing a soda bottle out of her car. Afande requested her to drive back and pick it up or he will arrest her.  Is this legal? Can she be arrested for this?

 

WHAT DOES THE LAW SAY?

 

All Ugandans have a right to a clean and healthy environment which creates a duty to protect, maintain and use the environment in a way that ensures that it is protected for the future generations. However, since we need guidance and supervision on this, the law (The National Environmental Act) gives authority to the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) to guide and monitor everyone on use and conservation of the environment.   

 

This law gives NEMA powers to come up with regulations and punishments for anyone who endangers the environment. If you are found throwing rubbish on the road or in trenches, you will be arrested by the police. This also applies to people who throw rubbish out of cars while on the road. 

Therefore, ifNakatenda refuses to drive back and pick up her soda bottle she may be arrested.
