The residents of Arua, in preparations to welcome President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni in WestNile region for Ezama Ham Mizamil Thanksgiving Ceremony, marched in a procession of over 1000 people in Arua City on Thursday 23-5-2024. Human Rights Report for 2023: Cattle Rustling and Prolonged Drought Led to Death of Over 2000 People in Karamoja.

With hardly an hour left before the Uganda Human Rights Commission unveils it's 26th Annual Report on the state of human rights & freedoms in Uganda for 2023, let us dive into the 2022 report findings. In the 2022 annual report, the Commission revealed that the prolonged dry spell that ravaged Karamoja sub-region killed over 2200 people in the districts of; Kotido, Moroto, Kaabong and Napak. “Insecurity and intensified livestock raids and theft intensified in April 2022, leading to loss of lives and isolated incidents of death among the population. The fragility of the situation not only limited households from accessing their farms for fear of being killed but also continued to deny them to access income for food purchase and safe grazing area for their herds,” read in part the 2022 human rights report.

The summons followed findings in the December 2023 Auditor General’s report that indicated that Microfinance Support Centre doesn’t have in any documents Risk Management Strategies that would guide the operations of the institution, with many MPs wondering if the current Board members are even aware of their roles at the institution.
