Yumbe District Officials Rally for Dialogue and Reconciliation in a Deadly Land Wrangle in Bolomoni Village.
The office of RDC Yumbe District, DISO and Police have on Tuesday 3-September-2024 summoned a meeting involving the family of Mr Luka Akile Fendru 🆚️ Mr Suleiman Karube Dudu emanating from a land dispute on 19-August-2024 which claimed the life of Mr Luka Akile Fendru and two other people from the family of Mr Suleiman Karube Dudu, henceforth leading to demolition of 13 houses and over 100 animals looted from the family of Mr Luka Akile.
Following these series of these incidents, the police in Yumbe Central Police Station were able to arrest 4 people from the family of Mr Luka Akile Fendru and 2 people from the family of Mr Suleiman Karube Dudu over the murder cases which happened on both sides.
Whereas the two bodies from the side of Mr Suleiman Karube Dudu were buried weeks ago, the body of Mr Luka Akile Fendru had still remained in the mortuary due to the house demolition circumstances, threat to their lives which made the family members to fled for their lives and as well awaiting the arrival of one of Mr Luka Akile Fendru's son who works in America.
On Monday 2-September-2024, the Lawyer for the family of Mr Luka Akile Fendru made a request to the police at Yumbe CPS to release on bond the four suspects from Luka's family to go for his burial on Wednesday 4-September-2024 on two main grounds, that, 1- They have stayed in police detention beyond the constitutional 48 hours since they were arrested on Wednesday 28-August-2024.
2- That, on cultural and humanitarian basis, they need to be present at the burial of their father.
Mr Luka Akile Fendru's family Lawyer's request was somehow not straightaway responded to on grounds that, District Security Committee (DSC) comprised of the RDC, DISO, DPC, OC CID and LC5 would sit on Tuesday 3-Sep-2024 to discuss the bond request for the four sons of Luka Akile so that they can go and attend his burial on Wednesday.
However, on Tuesday 3-Sep-2024, the District Security Committee (DSC) decided to go to the family to discuss and forge a way forward through dialogue and reconciliation so that these fights and attacks between the two parties would end forever, and the meeting agreed to have a mega meeting on 12-September-2024 to solve the land matter and close the cases on both sides.
It's believed that, the police would tomorrow 4-Sep-2024 release on bond, the four sons of Mr Luka Akile Fendru to go and attend his burial, and return them back to police detention, awaiting the agreed date 12-September-2024 to hold a mega meeting with both parties and all the district stakeholders to address the land conflict, there after close the cases and complaints from the two parties.
Some of the available documents indicate that, Mr Luka Akile Fendru (RIP) who inherited the 600 acres of land from his parents from the 1930s, is the owner of the land after a council of elders sat for dispute resolution meeting in 2023 and they passed judgement in his favor as the legitimate owner of the land.
The family members of Mr Luka Akile confessed that, when the refugees from south Sudan came to Yumbe in 2016, their family signed MoU with Uganda government to voluntarily offer part of their 600 acres of land to settle the refugees.
