WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU SURVIVE THE DEATH PENALTY WHEN IT IS CARRIED OUT ON YOU ?.

Machuchu was waiting for his punishment for murder for 3 years before it was time for him to face the death penalty. When Machuchu’s turn to face the death penalty came, he was hanged 4 different times and each time, the rope would get torn, and he would fall, and they would try again. Eventually, the executioner gave up and told him to return to his cell until they could figure out what to do with him.  Now all of them are confused, and they want to know what they should do with him. What should be done to a person when the death penalty fails to work on them?

WHAT DOES THE LAW SAY?
First, it is unlawful to take someone’s life in Uganda except when this is done to fulfil a punishment passed down by the courts of law for a very serious crime (called a capital offence), which is carried out by the government. When this happens, we say a person is facing the death penalty.
For example, if someone commits a very serious crime like murder, and they are found guilty of it, they may be sentenced to the death penalty. This means that they will be put to death as punishment for what they did. Usually, the death penalty is carried out by hanging by the neck until dead, by firing squad or by lethal injection in some countries.
What this means is that when a person is sentenced to death, that punishment must be carried out and it must be done in such a way that it does not cause undue unreasonable suffering on the person who is being punished.

In Machuchu’s case, even if the punishment was not correctly carried out the first time, the officers must make sure they carry it out as required by the law (which means he must be hanged until he is dead, then the body is taken down).
